This Nina Simone interview is the inspiration we all need right now
‘We will shape and mould this country’
In the wake of this election cycle, the late Nina Simone’s words of inspiration could not be more needed. In an interview for her movie, Nina Simone: Great Performances – Live College Concerts & Interview, she says:
“When every day is a matter of survival I don’t think you can help but be involved. Young people, black and white, know this. That’s why they’re so involved in politics. We will shape and mould this country, or it will not be moulded and shaped at all.”
Simone calls all artists of her generation and ours to action, saying:
“An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times…I choose to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself.”
It’s clear in the wake of Donald Trump’s election that Nina Simone would think we cannot sit still.
Thank you, Nina. Thank you.
