United Airlines didn’t let girls board their plane in leggings, and people on Twitter aren’t here for it

‘Nothing on a plane offends me more than a comfortable woman’

Yesterday, United Airlines barred three young girls from boarding a plane, just because they were wearing leggings.

Activist Shannon Watts tweeted about what happened to the group of five girls, one aged just 10, when they tried to board a flight at Denver airport. She said a member of staff was “forcing” them to change their clothes or wear dresses over the leggings.

Three were allowed to board after covering up, but two were prevented from flying.

United tried to defend their actions, saying the girls were travelling on a special pass for employees and guests, which has a dress code. The dress code prohibits pass-holders from wearing “form-fitting lycra/spandex tops, pants and dresses”, among various other stipulations, including no exposed midriffs, no mini skirts and no flip-flops.

Naturally, people weren’t happy. Shannon said: “This behaviour is sexist and sexualises young girls. Not to mention the families were mortified and inconvenienced. Since when does United police women’s clothing?”

People on Twitter were just as angry, shocked and confused. Here’s the best reactions:
