Did ABC purposefully cast a racist to be a contestant on The Bachelorette?

What would Rachel think of this?

Lee Garrett is a contestant on the current cycle of The Bachelorette. He’s a 30 year-old singer/songwriter from Nashville, TN. Oh, and he might also be racist and sexist based on unearthed posts from his social media profiles. Tweets have exposed this contestants dark side.

Garrett’s tweets were exposed on Twitter two days ago.

ABC and it’s juggernaut Bachelor franchise has been receiving a lot of positive press for finally casting the first ever African-American Bachelorette, so this development is disappointing to say the least.

Yes, it’s horrible that ABC may have cast a racist to vie for a Black women’s love and attention, but what is potentially more disturbing is the kind of message this sends the young girls who religiously watch the show. Is this really the kind of guy these women should be hoping for? The show is supposed to be about finding a Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet, and the idea that this guy could be anyone’s Prince Charming is disgusting. If Garrett is going to disrespect people of color and women on a public platform, then how is he going to treat his wife in private?

Assuming more than 25 people audition for the 25 spots available on the show, it doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to find someone who isn’t a complete jackass.

It may only be reality television, but it is still a platform that has launched many former contestants to stardom. Giving Garrett this platform is dangerous and irresponsible.

ABC has declined to comment.
