‘She was immeshed in the delusion where she’s thinking it’s a good thing to help him die,’ expert says in Michelle Carter trial

‘She’s not doing something she thinks is criminal’

Dr. Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist currently giving his expert testimony in the Michelle Carter texting suicide case, said Carter believed she was doing the right thing by encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.

Breggin said Carter was involuntarily intoxicated by the anti-depressants she was taking, which caused her to become delusional.

According to Breggin, Carter was having nightmares in which the devil was telling her to commit suicide. He said Carter was extremely afraid of the devil, which led her to believe that encouraging Roy’s suicide is the right thing to do.

“She’s not doing something she thinks is criminal,” Breggin said.

He also said Carter thought she was helping Roy by ensuring he does not fail in his next suicide attempt.

“She has found the way to use her unique power to help and to love, to help this boyfriend…not keep making mistakes. She’s going to help him do it better,” Breggin said. “On July 2nd she begins to help him go to heaven.”

Breggin then claims with medical certainty that Carter’s use of SSRIs inhibited her from conforming her conduct and actions to the requirements of the law.

“She was immeshed in the delusion where she’s thinking that it’s a good thing to help him die,” Breggin said. “She can mitigate the circumstances, reassure him that he’s going to heaven. ”

Carter is accused of convincing her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, to commit suicide in multiple text message exchanges which can be read here. Carter is currently pleading not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter.

The prosecution alleges Carter pushed Roy to commit suicide as a way of gaining attention for herself.
