Kamala Harris is here to be our new icon — and we really, really need her

It’s about more than cracking the glass ceiling

Yesterday, Senator Kamala Harris was all over the news for making Attorney General Jeff Sessions “nervous” at his Congressional hearing and continuing to slay him with questions — even after being repeatedly interrupted by her male peers.

But Senator Harris’ performance at Sessions’ hearing is just the tip of the proverbial grrrl pwr iceberg when it comes to the litany of reasons why she is the feminist icon we all need in the era of Trump.

Before running for Senate, Senator Harris served as the attorney general of California. She was the first woman, the first Jamaican American, the first Asian American, the first Indian American, and the first African American attorney general in the state. So basically, she broke like, five glass ceilings all at once.

But like all great Wikipedia entries/superhero origin stories, that was just the beginning.

Now, Senator Harris is a junior Senator. She paved the way for the women who would come after her by making history as the first ever Indian-American to serve in the United States Senate and California’s first Black Senator.

Beyond being inspiring for just being a member of the Senate, Senator Harris has been doing important work since she got there. According to her website, she has been combating Trump’s stance on deportation, the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, and funding cuts to public health projects.

And rumor is, she isn’t stopping. There is widely spread speculation Harris will run for president in 2020.

Now I’m not saying she definitely will, and I’m not saying I know enough about her platform to say I’d definitively vote for her. But I’ve got a great voice for phone banks.
