Today, jury selection begins in Taylor Swift’s sexual assault trial against radio host David Mueller.
Swift, 27, accused Mueller, 55, of groping her during a photo op before a concert in 2013. Mueller is suing Swift for what he asserts is a false accusation that ruined his reputation, seeking $3 million in damages. Swift is countersuing for sexual assault, seeking just $1 in retribution.
Swift’s team says they hope a victory in court will serve “as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.”
Both sides are expected to testify this week, with Swift set to take the stand tomorrow after opening statements.
According to Swift’s lawyers, a photograph from the alleged assault is among critical evidence for the suit, “damning” proof that Mueller inappropriately touched her.
Mueller’s lawyers argue it shows him attempting to jump into the frame in time for the picture.
“He took his hand and put it up my dress and grabbed onto my ass cheek,” Swift reported in a statement immediately following the alleged incident, which Mueller denied and then told his staff to call the police because he “didn’t do anything.”
“It was not an accident. It was completely intentional, and I have never been so sure of anything in my life,” Swift said in a statement.
Mueller’s lawyers assert that if it was a matter of sexual assault, Swift wouldn’t have tried to keep the matter discreet by only telling people close to her at the time.
Swift’s mother, Andrea, and a member of her team will act as defendants in the lawsuit. Andrea Swift’s key testimony will revolve around the decision to contact Mueller’s boss instead of immediately calling police to report the incident.
Swift is required by law to be present all nine days of testimony.
