Taylor Swift’s video director just revealed what that ‘The old Taylor is dead’ line means

Of course it’s super calculating

Never one to leave a single stone un-turned, Taylor Swift recently trademarked the phrase "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now." Why? Oh, because she's dead.

But according to a number of articles published immediately after she dropped her video, and overtook Adele on Vevo as the most viewed video in 24 hours, the "Old Taylor" isn't dead, she's alive and well.

So what's the truth?

According to the director of "Look What You Made Me Do," Joseph Kahn, there is a deeper meaning. Isn't there always with Swift?

In a new interview with Variety, he said, the "Old Taylor Swift" and the "New Taylor Swift" are exactly the same.

  • "Taylor is Taylor," he explained, "She’s so consistent in who she is. Her imaging may be changing depending on what the thematics of the art is that she's producing, but the person remains the same."

So the authors of the "Alive and Well" articles will be happy to know they were correct. Only, Taylor already knew it.

"There's a core person there that's really a fantastic human being," Kahn said. And who doesn't like "Red" Swift anyway?
