This artist is getting rape threats because her legs aren’t shaved in an Adidas campaign

Oh, horror of horrors!

Photographs of Swedish artist and photographer Arvida Byström for the adidas Originals campaign sparked controversy online for an extremely stupid reason: Byström has the audacity to be a woman who chooses not to shave her legs.

Oh, horror of horrors! What are my eyes beholding? Could it be like a woman is choosing to maintain her body hair in a way that makes her feel comfortable, without even considering how strangers online might feel about it?

Many people were supportive of Byström's decision to do whatever the fuck she wants with her own body, but others expressed disgust at her hairy legs

I feel that it's important to note that the single like on the above tweet came from the account that tweeted it.

Byström's body hair has not only compelled idiots around the world to comment on her appearance

According to an update the artist posted to her Instagram, she's also received rape threats in response to the pictures.

"Me being such an abled, white, cis body with its only nonconforming feature being a lil leg hair," Byström said. "Literally I've been getting rape threats in my DM inbox. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to not posses all these privileges and try to exist in the world."

Ironically, Byström also appears in a short video clip for the campaign that discusses the nature of femininity in today's society, a theme that often appears in her artwork. "I think femininity is usually created from our culture," she said. "I think everybody can do feminine things, can be feminine, and I feel like in today’s society we’re very scared of that."

  • And the visceral, hate-tinged reactions to a woman's normal-ass legs show that any deviation from the ideal of femininity is something else that today's society is very afraid of.
