In case you forgot, Marina and The Diamonds wrote ‘New Rules’ like a million years ago

But Dua’s song is a nice reminder that boys aren’t shit

If you were an angsty teen who spent your time dip-dying your hair and answering fan mail on Tumblr, you're probably intimate with Marina and The Diamonds. The singer blessed this earth with tons of bad girl anthems that played in the background as we all ripped up the photos of the High School ex-boyfriends or took our first shot of tequila and declared ourselves hot as fuck.

If you love Marina, you definitely remember "How To Be A Heartbreaker," which was basically a girl's guide to ruining mens' lives. Everyone's decided it must have been the inspiration for 'New Rules' by Dua Lipa because they're so similar – which is a major compliment, in my opinion.

Both songs give us rules to avoid heartbreak, which is treasured advice in a world where boys think penises are God's gift to women.

In "How To Be A Heartbreaker," Marina's rules are:

1.) Be the first to run

2.) Don't get attached to somebody you could lose

3.) Never wear your heart on your sleeve

4.) Leave him wanting more

And Dua's rules in "New Rules" are:

1.) Don't pick up the phone

2.) Don't let him in

3.) Don't be his friend

This is not a coincidence. Basically, Marina and The Diamonds wrote the rules like a million years ago, but Dua's take is a nice reminder that boys aren't shit. We all know we need this reminder multiple times a day, so I guess it's nice for pop radio to remind me by playing this song forty times during my daily commute.

Still, it's good to celebrate our nation's history by remembering Marina Diamandis' contributions to modern pop culture. Nothing but respect for MY president.
