‘It was life or death’: Selena breaks down in her first interview since surgery

She’s also undergone chemo treatments

Last month, Selena Gomez revealed why she'd been under the radar all summer: she'd undergone a kidney transplant as a result of her Lupus.

And in an interview with the Today Show this morning, she opened up about the experience for the first time with her best friend and kidney donor, Francia Raisa, at her side.

"My kidneys were just done," Gomez explained, "That was it and I didn't want to ask a single person in my life… And she volunteered and did it," she said of Raisa, whom she's already thanked publicly, via Instagram.

"You feel that Francia saved your life?" the interviewer asked, to which Gomez replied with a nod, saying, "Because she did," describing the transplant as a "life or death" move.

The 25-year-old singer has publicly battled Lupus for two years, and has also undergone chemo as part of her treatment.

Lupus is still a widely misunderstood disease, but the 25-year-old pop star is doing everything in her power to bring attention to the autoimmune disease.
