Iran imprisoned a woman for taking off her hijab, so now everyone’s doing it in solidarity

She started a movement

After an unnamed Iranian woman was jailed after removing her hijab and publicly waving a white scarf in protest of modesty law, other Iranian women have swooped in to support her protest in a similar fashion.

The woman first became a subject of discussion back in December of 2017, where she displayed her disapproval in Iran's capital. People on Twitter have hashtagged #WhereIsShe in an attempt to find the courageous young woman's identity.

Iranian women have had to cover their locks in hijabs since Iran's revolution in 1979. While the religious scarf isn't in and of itself oppressive — lots of Muslim women are empowered by it– state-sponsored mandates are. But now, some women are taking back the power of their hair in this public and controversial act of civil disobedience.

While there is a strict policy against them removing their headwear, more women across Iran have been going viral on social media by standing in public places, removing the hijab, and waving them like flags.
