UPDATE: 12-year-old girl arrested after a middle school shooting in Los Angeles

The suspect was arrested at 8:55 this morning

Two 15-year-old students were shot on Thursday morning in Westlake, Los Angeles, and a third student, a 12-year-old girl, is in custody as a suspect, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting took place inside a classroom at Salvador Castro Middle School, which shares a campus with Belmont High School.

Both of the students who were shot have been hospitalized. One of the students, a 15-year-old boy, was transported to a trauma center in critical condition while the other victim, a 15-year-old girl, is in fair condition according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Three other people, including a 12-year old, an 11-year-old, and 30-year-old woman who suffered "minor injuries," were hurt by debris from the shooting.

Women commit only 2 percent of mass shootings, according to analysis by TIME — but it is not yet clear if this incident falls into that category.

This shooting marks the 12th school shooting of 2018 so far.
