The guy running this Alabama politician’s campaign was found responsible of sexual assault

He has now resigned

This may come as a surprise to you, but a man competing in the Alabama midterms has been accused of vile behavior. Jim Toomey, a Democrat running for the Alabama House of Representatives, picked a man found responsible for sexual assault to run his race.

Toomey chose Caleb Carter as his campaign manager – Carter was named in a Title IX report by the University of Alabama, Birmingham on three counts of sexual violence, including "non-consensual sexual intercourse".

But when contacted by the man who stepped forward to accuse Carter of sexual assault (a rising star of the Democratic Party's youth wing named Blake Kitterman), Toomey sent the shocking reply: "You failed to give me relevant facts, and I do not find you credible."

It was a response that left Kitterman stunned. "Reading that response was like a knife going through my gut," he told babe. "His campaign manager was found responsible of three counts of sexual violence, to the extent that he was trespassed from my university – that’s all the relevant information he needs."

Kitterman filed a Title IX report against Carter in 2017, and a hearing panel found him responsible of sexual assault based on preponderance of evidence. When he heard about Carter's appointment to Toomey's team, he contacted Democratic Party authorities but did not heard back. So he started speaking out, tweeting about Toomey's campaign hire.

It was only after Alabamians started piling in on Toomey's social media pages to say he was "horrendous", "disgusting" and "should be ashamed of himself" that he finally acted. Toomey announced Carter resigned as his manager, and said that as a politician should have "been more compassionate" towards Kitterman.

"I pride myself on my compassion and integrity and regret my response did not reflect those important traits," Toomey said. "I hope the young man will accept my apology."

Kitterman told babe that Toomey has not yet apologized to him personally.

Caleb Carter denied any accusations of sexual assault. In a post announcing his resignation, he said: "The horrific allegations that have been made are absolutely unfounded and untrue. I did not sexually assault or rape anyone at anytime. There has been no finding that a rape or sexual assault occurred, in either a criminal or civil proceeding. These allegations are a distraction to the campaign, and the value of Jim Toomey to Alabama."

In a statement to babe, Carrie McFadden, LGBTQ+ Caucus chair of the Young Democrats of America, said:

"Particularly within the Democratic Party and progressive politics in general, there is no place for leaders who doubt victims their so-called credibility. Even after being provided the proof he had requested of Blake, Jim Toomey dismissed him — and with that, his experience and trauma. While it’s good that he accepted the resignation of Caleb Carter, it never should have come to that point. I believe Blake and believe that our party needs to do and expect better of our candidates and elected officials."

Alabama goes to the polls on November 6.
