How to roll a joint: A step-by-step guide

Everyone who smokes weed has a favorite way to get it done. At least, that's what I've heard. I've never smoked weed… hi mom! One of the classic ways to smoke some dope? Rolling a joint with your buds then passing it around. But before you get to the fun part, you have to make the blunt. And that's not as easy as it sounds. Whether you're a marijuana newbie or an old pro looking for a new way to smoke your stuff, here's a step-by-step guide on how to roll a joint. If you're into that.

Step 1: Get your materials together

Like any arts and crafts project, you gotta start by getting everything you need in one place. Here's what you need to roll a joint:

• Cannabis (duh)

• Rolling papers (There are a bunch of different papers. Here's a guide.)

• Something to make the filter (Some rolling paper packages include a filter. If you don't have one, grab some cardboard or thick paper)

• A pen

Step 2: Make a filter

The filter isn't totally necessary, but it helps keep the weed in the joint and keeps you from burning your fingers. I would highly recommend. It takes two seconds to make one. Here's how:

If you already have a filter from your pack of rolling papers, sweet! If not, grab your small piece of cardboard or thick paper and cut it to be about half an inch wide and 3 inches long. Hold the paper so it's tall, then make some accordion folds at the bottom. After three or so folds, roll it to the desired thickness of your joint.

Step 3: Fill your paper with weed

Pop the filter on one side of your rolling paper, then start to fill it with (ground) cannabis. Usually half a gram to a gram is enough. You can start to shape the joint by gently folding it into a half-circle.

Step 4: Pack the joint

Once your joint is loaded and shaped, you can pack it. Pinch the paper between your fingers and roll it back and forth to get the cannabis into its final position.

Step 5: Roll it

This is the most important part. Take the unglued end of the paper and tuck it into the joint. Then, pull the glued end tight and tack it to the outside of the joint. Start to seal the glue on the side of the joint with the filter so the entire thing doesn't crumble while your fingers are busy. Take it bit by bit, sealing up the joint as you go. Don't try to do it all at once — it will fall apart!

Step 6: Finish it up

Once your joint is all sealed up, use a pen or similar tool to pack the weed. Push the pen into the open end of the joint to push the weed towards the filter. This ensures an even burn. No one wants to inhale paper fumes!

Step 7: Smoke it!

The fun part. Finally. If you aren't planning on smoking it right then and there, close the tip by twisting the paper.

See, wasn't that easy? Your new party trick. Just don't try to do this when you're too fucked up. That NEVER works well.
