Rich assholes got ripped off at a Halloween party so disastrous it’s being called New York’s answer to Fyre Festival

‘Easily the worst party I’ve ever been to’

As my fellow Poors and I spent the weekend drinking $9 vodka and scratching at our two-sizes-too-small Yandy costumes, the Gods were getting ready to bless us with some Halloween-themed schadenfreude in the form of rich assholes, a thunderstorm, and an abandoned building with girls peeing on the floor.

YES, my friends! A $100-per-ticket event promised gold-covered nipples for all and instead turned into the Fyre Fest of Halloween parties and I! Am! Obsessed! With! It!

The event, called You Are So Lucky (seriously lol) was branded by event organizers as an immersive party that would offer "experiences where you can get lost and see something that hasn't been done before."

And so thousands of the most pretentious people in New York City who were missing their friends from Burning Man paid $100 per night for a trip out to Governor's Island only to find a chaotic mess some guests likened to Fyre Festival.

A guest told babe the event was a "total fucking shitshow," and said the night turned into a "complete shambles." Another said on Instagram that You Are So Lucky was "Easily the worst party I've ever been to," — adding: "Never had to pay money to freeze my ass off in the rain for two hours only to have the main attraction close down because of shit show planning."

"This will only happen once," the website grandly proclaims. Unfortunately, this tagline turned out to be far more accurate than the event organizers themselves could have ever predicted. Following a disastrous Friday night, the second night of the party was canceled. And based on the outpouring of criticism from guests who attended the first night, it does not seem likely that this "expansive landscape of sight and sound" (whatever that means) will ever happen again.

Here's what went down, according to guests who spoke to babe and a bunch of angry comments online.

On Friday night, thousands of guests commuted to Governors Island in the pouring rain only to be met with 'a total fucking shitshow'

In order to get their wristbands, guests were forced to wait in a disastrously designed line that quickly led people to start screaming and shoving each other. One guest, who wished to remain anonymous, told babe that mayhem descended almost immediately. "Within minutes of arriving on the island, people were screaming at each other in line."

After getting their wristbands, guests were forced to stand in yet another massive line in the pouring rain for the main venue, a former hospital building converted into a party space.

However, within hours the venue was shut down. According to the guest, who wished to remain anonymous out of sheer embarrassment, the majority of the guests were never able to access the main building, which housed all of the unique and immersive experiences that the event organizers had emphasized when they were promoting the party.

Instead, most party attendees ended up in a very standard dance tent nearby, getting the kind of experience you could pay $15 for in dozens of venues across the city. "The party ended up just being a bunch of people in a tent, most of whom weren't even dancing," another guest, who also wished to remain anonymous, told babe. Amusingly, the event’s co-producer Max Pollack had told Forbes: “People are gravitating towards experiences that are not just a DJ or an artist on stage.” Uh-huuuh.

But even the guests who did manage to get inside the main building had a decidedly unglamorous experience. A lack of bathrooms in the former hospital led to some girls peeing on the floor in a darkened room, babe has heard.

Leaving the party also proved to be a logistical nightmare. At the end of the night, thousands of guests were forced to wait in the freezing rain for a ferry back to Manhattan. "You can't blame the organizers for the weather," a guest told babe. "But you can blame them for coming up with an incredibly lame vibe, over-selling the tickets, failing to organize entry and exit, and for putting a party on Governors Island in late October."

The venue had not been announced when most attendees bought their tickets.

A guest speaking to babe described the event as a "total fucking shitshow," a "complete shambles," and said they "hope the organizers have to flee the country in embarassment." Another guest told us, "I'd rather step into the ice cold Hudson than go back to You Are So Lucky."

The event was jointly put on by You Are So Lucky, known for big parties like this, and Matte Projects, who some people might know for the Full Moon Festival and Diesel's Hypefest.

Angry guests took to social media to complain about the event

Following the disastrous first night of the event, disgruntled guests left angry comments on Instagram. At the time of this post, You Are So Lucky and Matte Projects have disabled comments on their respective Instagram accounts. However, someone helpfully sent babe a few screenshots.

"Easily the worst party I've ever been to," one Instagram user said. "Never had to pay money to freeze my ass off in the rain for two hours only to have the main attraction close down because of shit show planning. Don't waste your time. Def deserve a refund from that."

"This event sucked – you guys couldn't keep up with the fire code," another said. "It really ruined the experience and was not worth the $."

Yet another wrote, "What a poorly planned event! We were stuck on an island with an overcrowded tent and nowhere to go. Such a downgrade from last year. Save yourselves, don't go tonight!"

In the Burning Man NYC Facebook group, people also warned each other about the event. "ALERT for people going to the YASL event on Saturday: worst party ever," a Facebook user posted on October 27. Others rushed to agree.

"Totally agreed worst party ever this was a huge scam and rip off," another person wrote. "I've been to all their other parties this was so disappointing."

"Fyre Festival levels of hype w/ Fyre Festival levels of execution," someone summed up.

On Saturday, event organizers announced that the second night of the party was canceled

On the Instagram story of Matte Projects, the event organizers wrote: "Due to weather conditions, ferry service has been temporarily suspended. Our teams are working closely with Governors Island and we will be sending through updates periodically throughout the day. Thanks for bearing with us."

A few hours later, they updated: "We regret to announce that tonight's event has been canceled by our venue. While we were fully prepared and set up to make something beautiful happen, due to high tides and the storm, the venue has indicated that our event cannot proceed as planned, and we must respect their decision. We do this with love, and it hurts our heart when things go this way. We hope you can find something beautiful in the city on this rainy evening. We will release further information as soon as possible, including details about refunds."

However, Twitter user @Andrew_Hafnor pointed out that, according to the official NYC Ferry website, ferry service to Governors Island had actually resumed service on Saturday at 3:00 PM. And since the party itself was not scheduled to start until 8:00 PM, this seems to suggest that the event organizers had not canceled the second night because of the inclement weather, but rather because of how poorly the first night had gone.

We reached out to the event organizers but they did not respond to our request for comment.
