Katy Perry and the real reasons why breakup haircuts feel so damn good

Shed that shit

Yesterday, Katy Perry cut all of her hair off following a breakup with Orlando Bloom earlier in the week, and we all know exactly how she felt in that moment.

I WASNT READY TILL NOW

Cutting your hair off after a breakup is almost like a rite of passage for young women.

While People has reported that the couple are “taking respectful, loving space at this time,” Katy Perry just yesterday tweeted:

A few hour later, she posted the first pics of her new pixie cut, and I couldn’t help but smile knowing she probably felt a million times lighter.

A person doesn’t have to be “unstable” to cut their hair after a breakup. So many people tell you after a breakup that you shouldn’t do anything rash — get a tattoo, cut your hair, pierce anything. And while getting a tattoo is certainly more permanent, hair is something that will grow back and I am the biggest advocate of the chop.

I think a lot of people look at girls who have cut their hair and assume they’re either trying to look hotter, or they’re wildly unhappy.

Well if the cut makes them look hotter, then great, but it’s not about any of that. Cutting your hair off after a breakup is just another form of shedding something that may have been toxic from your life — shed a person, shed some hair. Hair that was there for all of the fights, or if you didn’t necessarily fight, there for the breakup regardless.

It’s okay after a breakup to want change. In fact, it’s healthy. It’s so easy to lose autonomy in a relationship and forge that we’re capable of making decisions for ourselves. Cutting our hair? Well that’s a tangible decision with an immediate outcome. It can, and it will make you feel happier.

Just take a line from Maggie Rogers powerhouse breakup anthem:

Cut my hair so I could rock back and forth without thinking of you. Learned to talk and say whatever I wanted to.

  • You and I, there’s air in between.
