Starbucks is the new pre-workout

The age old myth that caffeine is a bad idea before an intense workout has finally been dispelled.

Professor Bruno Gualano, at the University of Sao Paulo, created a study to test whether a caffeine boost affects how well people perform during their workouts, and the results are looking good for coffee addicts.

The study was broken up into three groups of male cyclists. The groups were based on their average coffee consumption. Each group was told to cycle until they burned 450 calories. They did so after taking either a caffeine pill equal to about four cups of coffee, a placebo or nothing at all.

The group that performed the best was the group that had taken the caffeine pill. Their average speed was 3.3 percent faster than the group who took nothing at all and 2.2 percent faster than the placebo group.

People who regularly drank coffee still received the same positive impact from the caffeine pill as the non-coffee drinkers, meaning slamming three shots of espresso, two coffees and a Redbull everyday won’t affect how much a caffeine pill boosts your energy.

Gualano made it clear that too much caffeine can be dangerous and should only be consumed in moderation.

So, next time someone nags you because of your coffee addiction just tell them you’re doing it so you can have a kick-ass workout later.
