Madalyn Joy, 23, is a lingerie designer and her pieces are all about empowering women to be their best selves.

Madalyn said she stumbled into the lingerie business when she was trying to make a Beyonce inspired evening gown, but she ended up making a robe instead, and after encouragement from her peers she decided lingerie was her calling.

“It’s very ironic, because growing up, I would refuse to wear a regular bra. I would only wear a sports bra or a training bra, because I always thought they were gross and uncomfortable,” Madalyn said. “So it’s super funny that my life revolves around making bras now.”

Madalyn’s received a lot of negative comments about her career choice, and she thinks it’s mostly due to common media misconceptions. She wanted her lingerie to be a pushback from the cheap degrading lingerie seen in Hollywood, by designing pieces that women can wear to make themselves feel beautiful instead of using it as a way to display their bodies for someone else.

“I wanted to challenge the misconceptions, because lingerie can be so beautiful. Like I always say lingerie is perfect for when you’re getting ready in the morning or going out with the girls it doesn’t have to be for your boyfriend or for someone else,” Madalyn said.

Madalyn says the positive responses from her friends, family and models have far outweighed the negative ones, and push her to keep moving forward.

“The models will tell me ‘I’ve always dreamed of being a Victoria’s Secret Angel and now I get to see what it’s like by being a Madalyn Joy Angel,'” Madalyn said. “Seeing the way the women light up when they wear the lingerie and knowing how beautiful they feel is incredible.”

The best part about Madalyn’s lingerie line is everything is custom created for each individuals body measurements, because she doesn’t believe in the standardized corporate sizing.

“I just think it’s so important that you should have garments that fit you and not you fitting into garments,” Madalyn said. “I’ll make something to fit you and your curves, because you should be able to feel confident in that and show it off.”

Madalyn is disappointed in the way social media makes herself and other women feel about their bodies. She says it’s so sad to see women who don’t think they are pretty enough or fit enough.

“When I go on social media I see so many women who hate their bodies, and women who are portrayed as objects, Madalyn said. “So, I just want to make clothes that can make women feel like they are beautiful.”

Madalyn is adamant that a woman wearing lingerie is a force to be reckoned with.

“Whenever I talk to women and they have a matching set of lingerie on under their clothes and no one else knows it they feel like they can take on the world. You just feel so confident and put together and literally no one sees it, but you just feel confident, beautiful and powerful like you can take on the world.”
