Girls don’t sound stupid because we’re stupid, we sound stupid because we’re like, smart
OK, stay with me on this
If every time you end a statement, it comes out sounding like question and someone drags you for it, I have good news: You're probably smarter than they are.
Like when your sporty man-friend asks if you "Even know a single player on the Spurs?" and you say "Tony Parker?" and they're like, "You totally Googled that" even though your phone is tucked neatly into your bra and you're double fisting solo cups. (I did Google that by the way.)
Originally coined by New York Times writer James Gorman, phrasing statements like questions is called "uptalk," and while his dusty old ass thinks you sound like a stupid girl for it, a study by linguists at the University of Texas proves otherwise.
In the study, Cynthia McLemore, Amanda Ritchart and Amalia Arvaniti explain that uptalk is a way for a speaker to make sure the person they are talking with is digesting and understanding everything they're saying.
Intonation is about inclusivity, and when you flip your sentences up at the end, it shows empathy towards the person you're speaking with. The study says it's like adding, "Right?" to the end of a sentence — the way guys often do — but without being so pretentious about it.
Looks like we're just like humble, empathetic and smart. Right?
