Hours after Mac Miller’s death, Instagram thots started exploiting his death

How Tana Mongeau made Mac’s death about her

It's been mere days since Mac Miller tragically died from a drug overdose — but instead of letting him rest in peace, some particularly opportunistic people are taking advantage of this moment to gain some social media clout for themselves.

Much like how Newsweek cashed in on Anthony Bourdain's death by publishing half a dozen articles about him that were obvious grabs at SEO, suddenly all of these random girls are crawling out of the woodwork and claiming that they were Mac Miller's secret girlfriend.

Tana Mongeau, being the social climber "influencer" that she is, made an entire Instagram post about how she apparently dated Mac Miller — unbeknownst to the entire world, somehow.

"You made me feel something, you were sweet to me every second," she wrote underneath a screenshot of a text conversation with Mac. "You had this love for life and what you do that made me fall for you 10x harder…I wanted to come over last night…my soul is shattered…what I would do for you to tuck my hair behind my ear and kiss me one last time…I love you Malcolm. I love you."

This might seem cute at first…until you realize that this is Tana Mongeau, the con artist who scammed thousands out of their money, so everything she says or does is probably not rooted in reality.

Even more questionable is the fact that, on the night before Mac Miller's death (you know, the night when she "wanted to come over" to his place) she was actually sloppily making out with a random dude at the Pornhub Awards. Guess she couldn't make the time…?

But wait! It turns out that Mac Miller was entertaining not one secret girlfriend, but TWO. Uh oh, Tana, looks like you have some competition! Julia Kelly, an Instagram "model" I'd literally never heard of until today, ALSO posted a screenshot of her conversation with Mac.

"Thank you for your laughter and endless amounts of love," she captioned on Instagram. "Waking up next to you was a dream. I'm going to miss your sweet forehead kisses and affection. I would give anything to talk to you one last time and express my love. I love you forever, Malcolm."

If these two ladies are to be believed, then Mac Miller was very busy in the last few months — planting forehead kisses on Julia Kelly while tucking Tana Mongeau's hair behind her ear but then making it back to Julia's house in time to wake up next to her.

Even if these things actually happened, it is still incredibly exploitative and self-centered to use Mac Miller's death as an opportunity to talk about…yourself. As if the biggest tragedy about this story is the fact that you no longer have someone to kiss you and whisper sweet nothings into your ear!

To me, the most disrespectful part about all of this is the fact that they felt the need to share screenshots of Mac Miller’s private conversations with the entire world. Not only does it reek of trying way too hard to prove to the world that you kissed him one time (like okay..? Nobody asked you?) it is also deeply invasive and violates his privacy. And I don’t think that’s a great way to show respect to a man who you claim to love so much.

Instead of taking the time to remember his life and honor his accomplishments, these clout-chasers are unapologetically invoking his name just to get attention for themselves. There's a time and a place to brag about how you got to make out with Mac Miller once. But the man literally just died — can you please stop talking about yourself for just one second?
